परिचय

Gaj Pipal (Scindapsus officinalis) is the elephant pepper, a large climbing aroid whose dried fruiting spikes resemble an oversized long pepper — hence the name. It is not a true pepper.

Ayurveda uses it as a warming digestive and respiratory drug, closely allied in action to Pippali but coarser and more strongly Kapha-clearing.

वर्गीकरण

Family Araceae. The dried fruit spike is the officinal part. Rasa: Katu, Tikta. Guna: Laghu, Ruksha, Tikshna. Virya: Ushna. Vipaka: Katu. Doshaghnata: pacifies Kapha and Vata.

उपयोग एवं लाभ

Given in poor appetite, abdominal distension and a coated tongue, and in cough and asthma where Kapha is thick. Classical texts also list it in Arshas and in worm infestation. It is used within compound formulations rather than alone.

Gaj Pipal for digestion

A strong Agni-deepana drug, used where appetite has failed and food sits heavily. It is warmer and more drying than most digestives.

Gaj Pipal for the chest

Its pungency cuts thick Kapha, which is why it appears in respiratory formulations alongside Pippali and Shunthi.

मात्रा — कितना लें

Fruit powder 500 mg – 2 g per day in divided doses, with honey or warm water. Small doses; it is a sharp drug.

मात्रा आयु, प्रकृति और अवस्था के अनुसार बदलती है — योग्य वैद्य से परामर्श अवश्य लें।
