Nilgiri (Eucalyptus globulus) is the blue gum, an Australian tree planted across the hills of southern and north-eastern India since the 1840s. Its leaves yield a sharp, camphoraceous oil dominated by cineole.
It has no place in the classical Nighantus — the tree reached India long after they were written — but it entered Indian practice through the nineteenth-century pharmacopoeias and is now standard in balms, inhalations and pain oils for its penetrating, decongestant action.
Family Myrtaceae. The leaf and the oil distilled from it are the officinal parts. By the properties assigned to it in later Indian works: Rasa Katu and Tikta; Guna Laghu, Tikshna; Virya Ushna; Vipaka Katu. Pacifies Kapha and Vata.
Used almost entirely externally. The oil is applied to the chest and back in cold congestion, inhaled in steam for a blocked nose and sinuses, and rubbed into muscles and joints for aching pain. In this catalogue it appears in the topical pain oils, where its penetrating warmth carries the other ingredients into the tissue.
Nilgiri oil for congestion
Added to hot water and inhaled, or rubbed on the chest, the oil opens a blocked nose and loosens thick catarrh. This is its commonest household use and the reason it appears in balms.
Nilgiri oil for aching muscles
Applied with a carrier oil it produces a warming, counter-irritant effect used for muscular pain, stiffness and joint ache — the basis of its inclusion in pain-relief oils.
External use. Dilute the oil to 1–3% in a carrier before applying to skin; 2–3 drops in hot water for steam inhalation. Not for internal use in this catalogue's preparations.

Eucalyptus Taila

FOR EXTERNAL USE. Eucalyptus oil is toxic if swallowed, and even small amounts are dangerous to children — keep well out of reach.
Can Nilgiri oil be taken internally?
No. Eucalyptus oil is toxic when swallowed and is used externally only in these preparations. Keep it away from children.
Why is a non-classical herb in Ayurvedic formulations?
It entered Indian practice through the nineteenth-century pharmacopoeias and is now standardised in the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India for external use. We list it honestly as post-classical rather than assigning it a Nighantu reference it never had.
