About Jamun Guthli Churna

Jamun (Syzygium cumini), Jambu in Sanskrit, is the Indian blackberry. Its seed, the "guthli", has been used in Indian households for generations around blood sugar. The Charaka Samhita mentions Jambu in the context of Prameha, and the Bhavaprakasha Nighantu describes its seed as Grahi (binding) and Pramehaghna (used in Prameha). What it is: a single-herb powder, 100% dried jamun seed. It is astringent and slightly bitter, with a cooling potency, which is why it is also used for loose stools and excess thirst. How Ayurveda uses it: Prameha is a group of urinary and metabolic disorders described with excess, cloudy or sweet urine, thirst and heaviness; Madhumeha (sweet urine) is the type most compared with high blood sugar. Astringent, bitter herbs like jamun seed are traditionally used to reduce Kapha and Meda (fat) and support the urinary channels. Classical treatment always pairs them with diet and exercise. How to take it: adults take 3–5 g (about a teaspoon) once or twice a day with water, before meals, or as your physician advises. People with diabetes need medical care. Jamun seed has been studied in animals and small human trials with some effect on blood sugar, but the evidence is limited. Do not stop or reduce diabetes medicines on your own. If you take it with diabetes medicine, check your sugar regularly, because the two together can drop it too low.

Classical reference: Bhavaprakash Nighantu; Jambu described in Charaka Samhita (Prameha context).

Jamun Guthli Churna — common questions

What is Jamun Guthli Churna used for?

Jamun Guthli Churna, jamun seed powder, is traditionally used in Ayurveda in Prameha, the classical group of urinary and metabolic disorders that includes Madhumeha (sweet urine), alongside diet and exercise. It is also a Grahi, stool-binding herb for loose stools. It is supportive care; people with diabetes should keep their treatment.

Does jamun seed powder lower blood sugar?

Jamun seed is a traditional Indian remedy for blood sugar, and animal and small human studies suggest it may have a modest effect. The evidence is not strong enough to rely on it. If you take diabetes medicine, keep taking it, follow your diet and exercise plan, and check your sugar regularly if you add jamun seed.

How do I take Jamun Guthli Churna?

Adults usually take 3–5 g, about a teaspoon, once or twice a day with a glass of water, before meals. Start at the lower dose. If you have diabetes, measure your blood sugar more often for the first few weeks and ask your doctor you are taking it.

Can I take jamun seed powder with diabetes medicine?

Only with your doctor's agreement. Taken together with tablets or insulin, it may lower your blood sugar further, which can cause a dangerous low. Learn the signs of low blood sugar, such as shakiness, sweating, a fast heartbeat or confusion, and never reduce your medicine yourself; your doctor may need to adjust it.

What are the side effects of Jamun Guthli Churna?

It is generally well tolerated. Because it is astringent, it can cause constipation or a dry mouth in some people. The main risk is low blood sugar if you take diabetes medicines too. Stop it about two weeks before any planned surgery, as it may affect blood sugar control.

Is jamun seed powder suitable for people with pre-diabetes?

Practitioners often include it in Ayurvedic plans for pre-diabetes alongside diet, weight loss and exercise, which are what reduce the risk most. It is not a substitute for those changes. Have your HbA1c or fasting sugar checked regularly, as advised by your doctor.

Is jamun a classical Ayurvedic herb?

Yes. Jambu (Syzygium cumini) is mentioned in the Charaka Samhita in the context of Prameha, and the Bhavaprakasha Nighantu describes its seed as Grahi and Pramehaghna. It is an ingredient of several classical Prameha formulas. Prachyam's Jamun Guthli Churna is the single, pure seed powder.

This is a traditional Ayurvedic formulation. Information here describes classical usage and is not a substitute for medical advice. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Consult a qualified physician before use, especially if pregnant, nursing, or on medication.
