About Sitopaladi Churna

Sitopaladi Churna is recorded in the Sharangadhara Samhita (Madhyama Khanda, Churna chapter) and is one of the best known Ayurvedic household remedies for cough. It is named after Sitopala, rock sugar, its largest ingredient. What it contains: Sitopala (rock sugar), Vamshalochana (the siliceous concretion of bamboo), Pippali (long pepper), Ela (cardamom) and Twak (cinnamon). The classical proportions are 16 : 8 : 4 : 2 : 1, so the powder is sweet with a warm, peppery finish. The table below lists each with its identity and part. How Ayurveda understands it: cough is described as Prana and Udana Vata moving upward against Kapha in the chest and throat. Pippali clears Kapha and warms; Vamshalochana and rock sugar soothe and cool the throat; cardamom and cinnamon aid digestion and taste. It is classed as Kasahara (relieving cough) and Kanthya (good for the throat), and is gentle enough for children. How to take it: adults take 3–6 g (about a teaspoon) mixed with a teaspoon of honey, two or three times a day; children 1–2 g with honey, as a physician advises. Lick it slowly so it coats the throat. Classical texts also give it with ghee for dry cough. When to see a doctor: cough for more than three weeks, cough with blood, breathlessness, chest pain, high fever, or wheezing in a child needs medical assessment. Honey must not be given to babies under one year. These uses are traditional and have not been tested in large trials. It contains a lot of sugar.

Classical reference: Bhaishajya Ratnavali / Sharangdhara Samhita (Kasa Chikitsa).

Sitopaladi Churna — common questions

What is Sitopaladi Churna used for?

Sitopaladi Churna is traditionally used in Ayurveda for Kasa (cough, especially dry or tickly cough), Pratishyaya (common cold), mild Shwasa (wheezing) and low fever with cough. It is classed as Kasahara (cough-relieving) and Kanthya (good for the throat). It is one of the most common Ayurvedic household remedies for cough and is gentle enough for children.

How do I take Sitopaladi Churna with honey?

Mix 3–6 g (about a teaspoon) with a teaspoon of honey into a paste and lick it slowly two or three times a day, so it coats the throat. For a dry cough, classical texts suggest mixing it with ghee instead. Avoid cold water and cold food straight after taking it.

Can children take Sitopaladi Churna?

Yes, it is traditionally used for children's coughs. Children over one year usually take 1–2 g with honey, but ask a physician for the right dose for age and weight. Never give honey to a baby under one year. See a doctor for a child with wheezing, fast breathing, high fever or a cough lasting more than two weeks.

Is Sitopaladi Churna good for dry cough or wet cough?

It is especially used for dry, tickly cough and throat irritation, taken with honey or ghee. It is also used for a cough with mild phlegm, as Pippali helps clear Kapha. For a thick, productive cough with fever, or cough after a cold that does not settle in three weeks, see a doctor.

Does Sitopaladi Churna contain sugar?

Yes. Its main ingredient is Sitopala, rock sugar, which makes up about half of the classical recipe. It is usually mixed with honey too. People with diabetes should ask their doctor before using it and monitor their blood sugar, or ask a physician about a sugar-free alternative.

When should I see a doctor for a cough?

See a doctor for a cough lasting more than three weeks, coughing blood, breathlessness, chest pain, high or persistent fever, night sweats or weight loss, or wheezing or fast breathing in a child. These can signal pneumonia, asthma, tuberculosis or other conditions that need tests and treatment.
