Common questions
What is Amlapitta?
Amlapitta is the Ayurvedic name for excess sourness and heat in the stomach — aggravated Pitta with weak digestion. Its classical features in Madhava Nidana include sour or bitter belching, burning in the chest and throat, nausea, heaviness and loss of appetite. It closely overlaps what is today called acidity or acid reflux.
Is this a GERD test?
No. It is a self-check of reflux-type symptoms, not a diagnosis. GERD is diagnosed by a doctor. The Montreal definition describes reflux as troublesome when mild symptoms occur two or more days a week, or moderate to severe symptoms one or more days a week — if that is you, see a doctor.
What are warning signs I should not ignore?
Difficulty or pain while swallowing, vomiting (especially blood), black or tarry stools, unexplained weight loss, anaemia, chest pain on exertion, or new symptoms after the age of 55. These need prompt medical evaluation, not self-care.
What helps Amlapitta day to day?
Regular meals without long gaps, a light early dinner, less spicy, sour, fried and fermented food, moderate tea, coffee and alcohol, and not lying down for 2–3 hours after eating. Cooling Ayurvedic formulations such as Acimukta or Avipattikar Churna are traditionally used alongside.
