Arshkuthar Rasa

Arshkuthar Ras, "the axe for Arsha (piles)", is recorded in the Bhaishajya Ratnavali and the Rasayoga Sagara in the chapter on Arsha. It is a strong Rasa (herbo-mineral) tablet classically chosen for dry, non-bleeding piles with sluggish digestion. What it contains: purified Parada (mercury) and Gandhaka (sulphur), Lauha (iron) and Tamra (copper) Bhasmas, Danti, Trikatu, Surana (elephant-foot yam), Vamshalochana, Tankana, Yava Kshara and rock salt, ground in Snuhi (Euphorbia) latex and processed in Gomutra (cow urine). The table below lists each one. How Ayurveda understands it: dry piles are described as Vata and Kapha with weak Agni and constipation, producing hard, painful swellings. Surana is the classical Arshoghna herb; Danti, Snuhi and Yava Kshara are strong, sharp agents that clear the bowel and reduce the swelling; and Trikatu kindles Agni. It is not the usual choice for bleeding piles, for which cooling, astringent medicines are preferred. How to take it: as on the label, 1–2 tablets twice a day after meals with warm water or buttermilk, only as prescribed. Physicians often start with 1 tablet. Eat fibre and drink water. Safety and red flags: it contains mercury, copper and strong purgatives, so the label carries the caution "to be taken under medical supervision". Rectal bleeding, a change in bowel habit, weight loss or anaemia need a doctor to rule out other causes. Large or prolapsing piles may need a procedure. These uses are traditional.

Is Arshkuthar Ras for bleeding piles?
