Bhringaraja (Eclipta prostrata, also called Eclipta alba), "the king of hair", is the foremost hair herb of Ayurveda. The Bhavaprakasha Nighantu describes it as Keshya (good for the hair), Rasayana (rejuvenative), Varnya (good for the complexion) and beneficial for the eyes, liver and skin. What it is: a single-herb powder of the whole Bhringaraja plant. It is bitter and pungent, and is described as Tridoshic, with a special action on Kapha and Vata. How Ayurveda uses it: taken internally, Bhringaraja is used for hair fall and early greying from within, alongside oiling the scalp with Bhringaraja oil. It is also one of the classical Yakrit-uttejaka (liver-supporting) herbs, used in Kamala (jaundice) and liver sluggishness, and as a Rasayana for general vitality. Classical texts recommend taking it with milk, honey or ghee. How to take it: adults take 3–5 g (about a teaspoon) once or twice a day with warm water, milk or honey, after meals. Traditional use and evidence: Eclipta has been studied in the laboratory and in animals for hair growth and the liver, but human trials are limited. Sudden, patchy or heavy hair loss can come from thyroid problems, iron deficiency or hormonal causes, and jaundice or liver disease always needs a doctor's care.
Classical reference: Bhavaprakash Nighantu (Bhringraja as Keshya / Rasayana).

Bhringraj Churna — common questions
What is Bhringraj Churna used for?
Bhringraj Churna is traditionally used in Ayurveda as a Keshya herb for hair fall and early greying from within, to support Yakrit (the liver), and as a Rasayana for vitality. Bhringaraja is called "the king of hair" in classical texts. It is a single-herb powder taken by mouth, often alongside Bhringaraja hair oil.
Does Bhringraj powder help hair growth?
Bhringaraja is the classical hair herb, and laboratory and animal studies suggest it may support hair growth, though human evidence is limited. Results are slow, usually over months. For heavy, sudden or patchy hair loss, see a doctor to check for thyroid problems, iron deficiency, hormonal causes or scalp conditions.
How do I take Bhringraj Churna?
Adults usually take 3–5 g, about a teaspoon, once or twice a day after meals with warm water, milk or honey. Classical texts favour milk or honey. Take it consistently for at least two to three months for hair, and pair it with regular scalp oiling with Bhringaraja oil.
Is Bhringraj good for the liver?
Bhringaraja is one of the classical Yakrit-uttejaka (liver-supporting) herbs and is traditionally used in Kamala (jaundice) and liver sluggishness. Laboratory studies show liver-protective activity. Jaundice, dark urine, pale stools or abdominal swelling always need a doctor's diagnosis and tests; Bhringaraja is supportive care only.
Can I apply Bhringraj powder on my hair?
Yes. Mixed with water, curd or aloe gel into a paste, it is traditionally applied as a hair pack for 30–60 minutes before washing. Do a patch test first. It can darken very light or bleached hair slightly. For regular scalp care, Bhringaraja oil is more convenient.
What are the side effects of Bhringraj Churna?
It is generally well tolerated. Some people notice a bitter taste, mild stomach upset or loose stools. It may lower blood sugar and blood pressure slightly, so people on those medicines should monitor. Avoid it in pregnancy and breastfeeding unless a physician advises it.
Is Bhringraja a classical Ayurvedic herb?
Yes. Bhringaraja is described in the Bhavaprakasha Nighantu as Keshya, Rasayana and Varnya, and is the main herb of classical preparations such as Bhringaraja Taila and Maha Bhringaraja Taila. Prachyam's Bhringraj Churna is the single, pure powder for internal use.
