About this formulation

Lohasava carries fine iron (Loha) suspended in a fermented base of Triphala, Trikatu, Vidanga, Musta and jaggery. The organic acids produced during fermentation are what make the mineral fraction palatable and, in the classical reading, easier for a weak Agni to accept. It is described in the Pandu Roga chapters for pallor, breathlessness on exertion and the heaviness that accompanies a slow liver and spleen. Because the formula is simultaneously a digestive and a haematinic, it is traditionally continued for several weeks rather than taken briefly.

Classical reference: Ayurvedic Formulary of India, Part I; Bhaishajya Ratnavali, Pandu Chikitsa.
