Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), "the smell and strength of a horse", is one of the most important Rasayana herbs of Ayurveda. The Charaka Samhita lists it among the Balya (strength-giving) and Brimhaniya (nourishing) herbs, and the Bhavaprakasha Nighantu describes it as Rasayana, Balya, Vatahara and Shukrala. What it is: a single-herb powder, 100% dried Ashwagandha root. It is bitter and astringent with a warming (Ushna) potency, and is described as balancing Vata and Kapha. How Ayurveda uses it: as a Rasayana for strength, stamina and recovery after illness; for Anidra (poor sleep) and an overactive, anxious mind, because it calms Vata; as a Balya tonic for muscles and the nervous system in older adults; and as a Vrishya (reproductive tonic) for men. Classical texts give it with warm milk and ghee, which is called Ashwagandha Ksheerapaka. How to take it: adults take 3–5 g (about a teaspoon) once or twice a day with warm milk, or with warm water, after meals. Taking the evening dose an hour before bed is traditional for sleep. Evidence and safety: Ashwagandha root extract has been tested in several small human trials for stress, sleep and strength, with encouraging results; these used extracts, not plain powder. Rare cases of liver injury have been reported with Ashwagandha supplements. It is not a treatment for depression, anxiety disorders or insomnia that need medical care.
Classical reference: Charaka Samhita & Bhavaprakash Nighantu (Ashwagandha as Balya / Rasayana).

Ashwagandha Churna — common questions
What is Ashwagandha Churna used for?
Ashwagandha Churna is traditionally used in Ayurveda as a Rasayana and Balya herb for weakness, fatigue and recovery, for Anidra (poor sleep) and a restless mind, and as a strengthening tonic for muscles and nerves. It is pure Ashwagandha root powder, classically taken with warm milk. It is one of the most important rejuvenative herbs in Ayurveda.
How do I take Ashwagandha Churna?
Adults usually take 3–5 g, about a teaspoon, once or twice a day after meals, stirred into warm milk with a little ghee or jaggery, as in the classical Ksheerapaka. Warm water also works. For sleep, take the evening dose about an hour before bed. Take it consistently for several weeks and review.
Does Ashwagandha help with stress, anxiety and sleep?
It is traditionally used to calm Vata, the dosha Ayurveda links with anxiety and poor sleep, and small human trials of Ashwagandha root extract show improvements in stress and sleep. It is not a treatment for anxiety disorders, depression or chronic insomnia. If low mood or anxiety affects daily life, speak to a doctor.
Is Ashwagandha good for male strength and vitality?
Ashwagandha is classically a Vrishya and Shukrala herb, and some small trials suggest it may support semen quality and strength training in men. Effects on male hormone levels are modest and not consistent. Low energy or libido can have medical causes, such as thyroid or hormonal problems, so see a doctor to check.
Who should not take Ashwagandha?
Avoid it in pregnancy, and ask your doctor if breastfeeding. People with an overactive thyroid, autoimmune disease or liver disease, or who take thyroid, sedative, anti-anxiety, blood-pressure, diabetes or immunosuppressant medicines, should check with their doctor first. Stop it two weeks before surgery.
What are the side effects of Ashwagandha?
Most people tolerate it well. Some notice an upset stomach, loose stools or drowsiness. Rare cases of liver injury have been reported with Ashwagandha supplements: stop it and see a doctor if you notice yellow eyes or skin, dark urine, itching or abdominal pain. People with thyroid problems should ask a doctor, as it may raise thyroid hormone levels.
Is Ashwagandha a classical Ayurvedic herb?
Yes. Ashwagandha is listed in the Charaka Samhita among the Balya and Brimhaniya herbs, and the Bhavaprakasha Nighantu describes it as Rasayana, Balya, Vatahara and Shukrala. It is the main herb of classical preparations such as Ashwagandharishta and Ashwagandhadi Lehya. Prachyam's Ashwagandha Churna is the single, pure root powder.
